San Potito Sannitico, The Town

ILoveSanPotito
San Potito Sannitico is a charming town of about 2,000 inhabitants, located 80 km north of Naples in the Campania region of Italy.

As a member of the Italian National Network of “slow cities,” it offers a peaceful, human-scale environment surrounded by mountains, water, and breathtaking landscapes, shaped by its rich history and traditions.

At the foot of the Matese mountains, San Potito has long been a place of passage and encounter between the Apennines and the lowlands, as well as a place of refuge. Its history is still visible in stone portals, Roman and pre-Roman ruins, and the blend of cultural influences -Lombard, Byzantine, Norman, and Spanish- reflected in traditions and everyday life.

The locals are warm and welcoming, deeply connected to their land and its produce. They take pride in the region’s renowned delicacies, including mozzarella di bufala and pizza, and will likely invite you to taste them while sharing stories of the mountains or their Sannite ancestors—a resilient pre-Roman people who resisted Roman domination for three centuries.

In recent decades, San Potito has undergone a cultural rebirth

Since 2004, it has hosted FateFestival, an annual celebration of cinema, theatre, dance, and visual arts in public spaces, providing a platform for creative expression. This festival has since evolved into FateLab, a non-profit organization that fosters a continuous exchange between national and international artists, local residents, and the surrounding landscape. Today, San Potito has transformed into an open-air laboratory, with over 30 murals and site-specific installations created by visiting artists -offering an inspiring, immersive space for those looking to create, collaborate, and be part of a thriving artistic community.
